SPORTS FOR ALL BLITZ 2022
We are really looking forward to our annual fundraising Sport Blitz which will take place on Friday 14th October. This is our main annual fundraising event for the school. The funds raised will go directly towards classroom supplies, technology, sports equipment and new books for the library. It will also help with covering the PA costs for events held during the year such as Santa visits, Communion celebrations and graduations.
Please return your sponsorship cards to your son's teacher. The boys are encouraged to do some chores in return for sponsorship. All support is greatly appreciated.
Card and cash payments will be accepted on Thursday and Friday morning in the school Hall.
Classes 4th, 5th and 6th will be going 'off-campus' for the day. Boys from 4th will walk to Bluepool, Monkstown.
Boys from 5th and 6th will go to UCD by coach. Boys are kindly asked to meet in Foxrock Church carpark at 8.20am. Boys will return by coach to Foxrock Church carpark at 2pm.
First and third class boys are asked to bring in tennis rackets if available.

NATIONAL TREE WEEK
Mrs. Regan's class celebrated National Tree Week last Friday. They planted a beautiful holly sapling (very appropriate!) The boys look forward to nurturing the sapling during the course of the next 9 months and when it is ready it will be planted into the ground at the front of the school.
DEVELOPMENTAL LANGUAGE DISORDER- AWARENESS DAY
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day is being celebrated on Friday 14th October. This year’s theme is Growing with DLD, which focuses on supporting people with DLD across the lifespan.
DLD is the most prevalent childhood disability with an average of 2-3 students presenting with DLD in every Irish classroom. A student with DLD experiences difficulties with language and communication that can significantly impact learning, literacy, behaviour and well-being. DLD also prevails into adulthood, with a prevalence rate of 7.5% across the population.
What is Developmental Language Disorder?
DLD is a brain difference that makes talking and listening difficult. DLD poses a risk for social-emotional behavioral concerns. DLD is associated with risk for dyslexia and other learning disabilities. DLD is five times more prevalent than autism. DLD can last a lifetime, but help is available. If you would like to learn more please visit
https://radld.org or https://dldandme.org/
Thank you to Rosemary Kavanagh, speech and language therapist, for her very informative talk to all the staff on the topic of DLD.

DABBLEDOO MUSIC
We launched Dabbledoo music in all 24 of our classrooms this September. Dabbledoo is an independent, Irish provider of exciting and interactive online activities for music. It covers all elements of the Primary School Music Curriculum.
Our teachers recently attended a training webinar on incorporating this wonderful resource into their music lessons. So far, our boys and classroom teachers are really enjoying this engaging new addition.
Dabbledoo also offer free, specially created content for parents and guardians to enjoy at home with their children.
Go to https://dabbledoo.com/p/parents and sign up using our school roll number- 19258u.
Thank you to Mrs. Webbley for leading all things music in Hollypark.
CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL- FOOTBALL
On Thursday, our Senior B's play St. Colmcilles, Knocklyon in a winner takes all final! Our Senior A's play St. Pius, Terenure in a quarter final. I had the pleasure of watching our Junior B team play St. Michael's, Ballsbridge yesterday. Despite an incredible team performance, Hollypark lost by two points. And finally, our Junior A had a difficult outing versus St. Michael's yesterday but they have learned from the experience and they look forward to their final match next week.
Well done to all players and coaches. A word of thank you also to parents for supporting the boys with lifts and positive words of encouragement on the sidelines.
HALLOWE'EN DRESS UP
Halloween is upon us once again and we are looking forward to seeing the boys dressed up for our annual Hallowe'en dress-up day! This year it will take place on Friday 28th October.
Some boys have already begun their costume planning and we are excited to see the variety they will be dressed as from spooky to silly and everything in between. Please find below guidelines and requirements to follow for the smooth and safe running of the day:
- No accessories, i.e. nothing they need to hold in their hand or things that can be put down for others to potentially pick up and handle.
- No long capes, dangly material or anything that may be a tripping hazard.
- Costumes should be comfortable and practical for sitting in the classroom for the day, i.e. no inflatable costumes.
- Be mindful that the costume isn’t going to scare a younger student. If you think a Junior Infant will be frightened, then tone it down or reconsider.
Less is more when it comes to costumes and keeping it simple can often be the most effective. There will be prizes throughout the school for best dressed and creative costumes. It is a very exciting day for the boys and with your continued support and understanding we hope to make it another success.
This week is a very special week for these boys:
Caelan Reid, Darii Vaskul, Adam Barron, Bruce Fitzgerald, John Flood, Ryan Kearns, Ronan Mc Kennedy, Charlie Elliott, Aaron Dunne, Kevin Horan, Rionn Mc Namara agus Joshua Byrne.
We wish you a very happy birthday boys!
GREEN SCHOOLS COMMITTEE 2022
A huge thank you to our fabulous Green Schools committee who continue to teach us about sustainability, recycling, reducing and reusing. In a time where energy prices and costs are soaring, our boys are playing a vital role in keeping school costs down while also protecting the environment for future Hollypark students. We will continue to share their stories and projects with you during the year.
DEANSGRANGE LIBRARY VISIT
Miss O' Neill’s 6th class had a fantastic trip to Deansgrange library, last Friday. The boys enjoyed the tour and had the opportunity to choose some new reading material for their in class book clubs. One of the highlights of the visit was a demonstration of the 3D printer on site. The boys were intrigued by such up to date technology. The 6th class are avid readers and couldn’t believe that they can have up to 12 books on loan from the library at any one time. They can also access online learning resources and games under the supervision of a parent or guardian. Our other 6th classes will visit the library over the next few weeks.
We thank DLRCC library staff in Deansgrange for hosting us.
GOLF IN HOLLYPARK
Rory McIlroy, watch out! Each week Mr. Murphy takes 30 students to Jamestown Pitch and Putt course. The skill level of these golfers is astounding despite their young age. I was encouraged to see their manners, respect and golf etiquette shine through also. Formal interschools golf competitions will begin in the spring time and Hollypark will have a major advantage. Well done boys, keep up the good playing.
Pictured below are Henry and James, 4th class.
MATHS WEEK
We will be celebrating Maths Week Ireland next week. The boys will have their maths eyes peeled, engage with maths riddles, trails and see how mathematics is a major part of our everyday lives. In Hollypark BNS, we promote a positive attitude towards maths to further understand the world around us.
Thank you to Ms. Hynes and Mr. Mc Evoy for leading the week.
UCD MATHS ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME
Boys in 6th class who share a passion for all things maths, numbers and challenges should check out the UCD Maths Enrichment Programme.
https://maths.ucd.ie/~ndobbs/JME/
UCD is hosting Junior Mathematical Enrichment classes on Saturday mornings in the 2022-23 academic year. Classes, offered by the UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics in conjunction with the Irish Mathematical Trust, are run free of charge by talented tutors and are designed to develop a sound understanding of mathematics and to improve problem-solving skills.
Our programme is open to all students who show a genuine interest in mathematics. (Usually 1st and 2nd year students). In the file linked here you will find an exercise sheet which students should attempt before registering for the class.
STARS OF THE FUTURE
Pictured below is Lauri, 6th class, who entertained the whole school at assembly last week. Lauri played a tune on guitar, written by himself. His audience was very impressed! Also pictured below, is Brody, 5th class. Brody and his classmates are designing sustainable towns using 3D models. The boys are learning all about wind, solar and hydro power. Very important topics for today's world.
In our final picture, we have artwork from Ms. Dunne's infants, room 2. Boys were given the task of printing using fruit and vegetables. This linked in with their Aistear and Gaeilge themes for this month. Well done to all involved.
