MATHS WEEK
We will be celebrating Maths Week Ireland next week. The boys will have their maths eyes peeled, engage with maths riddles, trails and see how mathematics is a major part of our everyday lives. In Hollypark BNS, we promote a positive attitude towards maths to further understand the world around us.
Thank you to Ms. Hynes and Mr. Mc Evoy for leading the week.
SPORTS BLITZ 2023
The Parents' Association are busy making plans for our upcoming annual fundraising Sport Blitz which will take place on Friday 20th October. Sports activities on the day will include Soccer, GAA, Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Volleyball, High 5 Sports, Frisbee, Table Tennis, Pilates, Yoga, Dance Classes, Outdoor Games...with such a wide range of activities, it promises to be a day of active fun for the boys.
The Sports Blitz is our main annual fundraiser for our school, and we deeply appreciate your generous support from last year. Thanks to your contributions, the Parents' Association were able to make valuable additions to our school over the year, such as the creation of the Sensory Room, the purchase of Play Equipment for the Junior Yard, investment in C-Pens (compact text-scanning devices that read aloud), and the refurbishment of our library during the summer break.
Additionally, every year the funds raised directly benefit the classrooms by providing essential supplies and new books for the library. They also help cover the costs associated with PA organised events throughout the year, including parent evenings, Santa visits, communion celebrations and graduation events.
Sponsorship cards were sent home last week, and we are encouraging all the boys to take part by completing chores in exchange for sponsorship. Your support, in any form, is greatly appreciated. We are looking forward to making this year's Sports Blitz another memorable and successful day!
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)
Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day is being celebrated on Friday 20th October. This year’s theme is Growing with DLD, which focuses on supporting people with DLD across the lifespan.
DLD is the most prevalent childhood disability with an average of 2-3 students presenting with DLD in every Irish classroom. A student with DLD experiences difficulties with language and communication that can significantly impact learning, literacy, behaviour and well-being. DLD also prevails into adulthood, with a prevalence rate of 7.5% across the population.
WHAT IS DEVELOPMENTAL LANGUAGE DISORDER?
DLD is a brain difference that makes talking and listening difficult. DLD poses a risk for social-emotional behavioral concerns. DLD is associated with risk for dyslexia and other learning disabilities. DLD is five times more prevalent than autism. DLD can last a lifetime, but help is available. PARENT TALK:
NURTURING SELF-EFFICACY & GROWTH MINDSET IN YOUR CHILD
In a joint initiative, Fiona Forman, expert on wellbeing, has been invited to talk to the parents of Hollypark BNS & GNS on Thursday 19th October @ 7.30pm. Hollypark BNS are hosting the event in our school hall.
Fiona Forman (M.Sc. Applied Positive Psychology)
Nurturing your child’s sense of self-efficacy and Growth Mindset can play a powerful role in helping them to feel more resilient, confident and empowered to face challenges and grow towards their potential.
In this talk, Fiona will outline what self-efficacy means, as well as offering several ways to nurture it in your child.
Growth Mindset (Dweck,2012) - the understanding that our talents and abilities are not fixed, but that they can be developed through effort, practice, and persistence – will also be explored.
Fiona Forman - Bio
Having spent many years as a teacher, Fiona is passionate about placing well-being at the heart of school and family life, and she has seen first-hand the many benefits this brings to both children and adults alike. She is the co-author of Weaving Well-Being, an SPHE programme for children which is now widely used in Ireland and abroad. Fiona is also the author of Wired for Well-Being, a well-being programme for second level schools. Her junior programme, Welcome to Well-Being, has also been released in Ireland and abroad.
Fiona is also the mother of 2 young adults, which has deepened her awareness of the importance of equipping our children with the support and skills they need to thrive and flourish, despite the challenges of life.
Her latest book, BRAVER THAN YOU BELIEVE: A Parent’s Guide to Building Children’s Resilience using Positive Psychology Skills has recently been released.
DABBLEDOO MUSIC
Last year, we launched Dabbledoo music in all 24 of our classrooms. Dabbledoo is an independent, Irish provider of exciting and interactive online activities for music. It covers all elements of the Primary School Music Curriculum.
Our teachers recently attended a training webinar on incorporating this wonderful resource into their music lessons. So far, our boys and classroom teachers are really enjoying this engaging new addition.
Dabbledoo also offer free, specially created content for parents and guardians to enjoy at home with their children.
Go to https://dabbledoo.com/p/parents and sign up using our school roll number- 19258u.
Thank you to Ms. Morgan for leading all things music in Hollypark.
HALLOWE'EN DRESS UP
Halloween is nearly upon us once again and we are looking forward to seeing the boys dressed up for our annual Hallowe'en dress-up day! This year it will take place on Friday 27th October.
Some boys have already begun their costume planning and we are excited to see the variety they will be dressed as from spooky to silly and everything in between. Please find below guidelines and requirements to follow for the smooth and safe running of the day:
- No accessories, i.e. nothing they need to hold in their hand or things that can be put down for others to potentially pick up and handle.
- No long capes, dangly material or anything that may be a tripping hazard.
- Costumes should be comfortable and practical for sitting in the classroom for the day, i.e. no inflatable costumes.
- Be mindful that the costume isn’t going to scare a younger student. If you think a Junior Infant will be frightened, then tone it down or reconsider.
Less is more when it comes to costumes and keeping it simple can often be the most effective. There will be prizes throughout the school for best dressed and creative costumes. It is a very exciting day for the boys and with your continued support and understanding we hope to make it another success.
AISTEAR (PLAY-BASED LEARNING)
Junior, Senior Infants and 1st class continue to actively engage in play-based learning. Aistear is a vital component of the junior curriculum and the teachers are noticing many positives in the boys’ use of language, social skills, imagination and communication. Furthermore, the boys are really enjoying this type of learning! Investigating, questioning and using imagination are key elements to the success of the programme.
Thank you very much for the donations we have already received. They have gone down a treat with pupils and teachers alike in Infans! If you have any of the following items at home, in good condition, that you would like to donate to the school for Aistear, it would be greatly appreciated.
- Construction work bench (see photo)
- Farm shed
- Farm animals
- Toy characters / people
- Cars
- Car garages
- Car mats
- Construction blocks
- Dolls houses
- Lego people
- Trains / train sets
JUNIOR INFANTS INFORMATION EVENING
We welcomed our Junior Infant parents to the school on Wednesday, 10th October. It was lovely to meet with all parents and spend time getting to know everyone. We hope you enjoyed the evening too.
Thank you to the Parents' Association who welcomed the parents into the hall for wine, cheese, tea and coffee after the talk.
GOLF IN HOLLYPARK
Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry, watch out! Each week Mr. Murphy takes 30 students to Jamestown Pitch and Putt course. The skill level of these golfers is astounding despite their young age. I was encouraged to see their manners, respect and golf etiquette shine through also. Formal interschools golf competitions will begin in the spring time and Hollypark will have a major advantage. Well done boys, keep up the good playing.
Pictured are boys from 4th class enjoying their day on the Golf course!
GAELIC SUCCESS
Well done to our 4 Gaelic Football teams who continue to impress each week. Our Junior A and Bs go from strength to strength each week with magnificent performances against St. Laurences, St. Brigid's and Ballyroan. The skill level is quite remarkable but the most pleasing aspect is the teamwork shown throughout. Well done boys on your fabulous play. Ireland rugby are not the only team with a major 1/4 final this week. Our Senior A team play St. Mary's, Rathfarnham in The Hermitage @ 3 pm on Thursday. It promises to be an epic encounter. We wish you well boys, you will do us proud.
Thank you once again to Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Mc Evoy, Mrs. Walsh, Ms. K. Costello, Ms. Reynolds,Mr. Murphy Mr. O' Brien and Ms. E. Costello for their time, effort and skills with all the teams. It is really appreciated.
CONGRATULATIONS KILMACUD LADIES
A huge congratulations to the Kilmacud Senior Ladies Football Team who beat Na Fianna last weekend in the County Final. It is a huge achievement. Many of the players are past pupils from Hollypark GNS and we offer our congratulations to the GNS also. Keep up the great work.
