THANK YOU
Thank you for your cooperation last Friday. The safety of our school community is always paramount.
ENGINEERS WEEK
Engineers Week 2024 was a huge success in Hollypark BNS. Events took place across the week in all classes. Thank you to Ms. Hynes for organising and to the many parents and volunteers that came in to speak to the boys.
The boys in Ms Ryan’s Senior Infants really enjoyed their visit from Saeed. They learned about all the different forms of communication. He told the boys that engineers think about different ways to help people and solve problems. They are all thinking like engineers in Room 5 now!
The boys in Ms Ryan’s Senior Infant class made posters about communication for Engineers Week. They have also been busy designing and building homes, ships and bridges for Engineers Week.
Boys in Ms. Dunne's Senior Infants had great fun working in groups to plan and build spaghetti and marshmallow structures. There was great teamwork, lots of laughter and some very sticky fingers!
Ms. Costello's First Class wasted no time in diving straight into Engineers Week. They teamed up with Mr. McEvoy's 5th class for a demonstration using Sphero robots.
In second class, there were lots of engineers busy in action at various STEM stations organised by Mr Murphy and Ms Kearns. The boys created fantastic buildings and bridges.
The boys in 2nd class really enjoyed creating Lego robots. They took it one step further by coding the robots. Future engineers for sure!
Joe Dalton visited Mr Ryan's class on Friday to talk about his job as an engineer working with renewable energies. He talked to the boys about wind turbines and showed them how they are assembled and all about their uses. The boys also got the opportunity to make some paper aeroplanes and test them out.
It was great to have Alan Keogh in to talk to the boys in 6th class about how engineering can assist with climate change.
We were delighted to welcome our past pupil, Eoghan O’Mahony back in to speak to the 4th and 5th class boys about software engineering and all the exciting opportunities it leads to. Eoghan is studying Immersive Software Engineering in the University of Limerick. Eoghan’s interest in engineering started from the Scratch lessons he experienced in Hollypark many years ago.
The boys in Senior Infants and 1st class were very lucky to have Inés Alonso in to speak to them about all things space-related.
The boys in Ms Ryan’s Senior Infants and Mr Murphy’s second class were mesmerised as they held millions of euro worth of equipment brought in to them by engineer, Zac Cashman.
Ms Morgan’s class were busy comparing and contrasting the use of spaghetti and toothpicks with marshmallows for the tallest tower challenge.
The boys in Ms Morgan & Ms Feighan’s 3rd classes were treated to a very informative, inspiring and interactive talk from Aidan Cleary. The boys got the opportunity to study real plans and drawings for various projects. They also had time to investigate and explore real objects used in the construction of building bridges, tunnels, etc. The boys had prepared some fantastic questions for Aidan which he kindly answered also.
This is just a snapshot of the work that went on last week during Engineers Week. We were very lucky to have many other visitors in to speak to the boys, including Ciara Buckley, Ruth Crowe, Bidisha Ghosh, James Mountjoy, Margaret Connolly, Eamonn Barry and Arnold Mahon. We are very lucky to have wonderful parents in Hollypark BNS willing to give their time and expertise. Thank you all very much.
A huge word of thanks to all the teachers who organised wonderful projects and challenges for the boys. We look forward to having some of our students return in the future to talk about their own careers in engineering!!

Cineáltas Flag
The Cineáltas flag was raised in Hollypark today as a reminder to the school community of our commitment to show kindness to each other in our daily interactions in school. Our wonderful student council went around to every class in the school and asked them to explain what kindness (cineáltas) meant to them in their school lives. The boys on the student council then put together a poster showing the words that came up most frequently across all of the classes in our school. As you can see words like helping, honesty, sharing, loyalty, respect, loving and caring all featured heavily. The poster is on display in every corridor in the school as a reminder for the boys of our commitment to showing kindness to each other.
A copy of the poster is included below.
KYRIE FARM
Our 6th class pupils showed incredible kindness when helping to raise money for Kyrie Farm. Last week the boys handed over a cheque of €12,576 in aid of this great charity. Well done boys, we are proud of you.
WELCOME TO 'STAR- BUGS' HOTEL
In Hollypark, we are always looking at ways to help save the planet. Elliott, Colum, Harry and Jake had a great idea to build a bug hotel. Aided by Ms. Mc Laughlin and Mr. Jones, they set about researching, designing, planning and building 'Star- Bugs' hotel. What a fantastic idea, thank you boys. Resident bugs will be able to live a happy life in the the triangle flower bed at the front of our school.
This week is an important week for these great pupils: Conor Hanly, Nicholas Twomey, Niall Buckley, Conor Whelan, James Daly, Tadhg Mulholland and Harvey Kiernan.
Enjoy the celebrations boys!
Beir bua agus beannacht,
