Brighter days ahead

Covid-19 updated guidance

With updated guidance issued during the mid-term break, I wish to draw your attention to some of the main points for your son’s return to school.

Mask wearing for staff and for pupils from 3rd to 6th class is no longer required. We appreciate your co-operation with this aspect in particular over the past few months. We do envisage however, that many of our staff and some pupils may still choose to continue to wear a face covering. They have our full support and the school will continue to provide masks for those who wish to continue wearing them.

A number of positive practices have come about within the school as a result of procedures put in place to stop the spread of Covid. Some of these will continue to be implemented.

We will continue to promote good hygiene. Hand hygiene can be achieved by hand washing or use of a hand sanitiser (when hands look clean).

The Department of Education has provided additional funding to schools to support the enhanced cleaning required to minimise the risks of COVID-19. This funding will continue for this academic year and will be reviewed in advance of the start of the next school year.

As the general requirement for physical distancing in society no longer applies, schools are no longer required to maintain class pods and bubbles. This will facilitate a return to team teaching, sports, singing, music and after school activities.

We wish to thank the parent body for your continued support throughout the school year. We could not do this without your cooperation.

I would also like to applaud our staff - our teachers, SNA’s, Eilish our secretary and Garrett our caretaker and our Lead Work Representatives (Mr. Mc Evoy, Mr. Mitchell and Mrs. Walsh) for their remarkable talents and skills used on a daily basis to fuel our mutual efforts over the past two years.  We are dedicated to providing your son with a child-centred, inclusive and caring environment to enable him to reach his full potential.  Your son’s wellbeing was and will continue to be at the forefront of everything we do. We understand the impact of school closures, restraints on mixing and parents working from home and we will continue to support families.

Our staff have faced challenges and overcome many obstacles, but always kept going.  Well done to everyone. It has been a tough two years, looking back it sometimes feels like a dream, a dream thankfully we have nearly woken up from.

Finally, I would like to pay our respects to those families who lost a beloved family member or friend to Covid over the past two years.  May they remain forever in our hearts.

green schools

Our Green Schools Committee is once again very active this spring. Our grounds are looking superb as our daffodils are now beginning to pop their heads above ground. Our Green Schools and 3rd class will take on the ‘Woodie’s Budding Gardeners’ challenges this spring and learn everything from planting bulbs, growing fruit and veg, creating a micro meadow and designing their own sustainable garden. We look forward to seeing the great results. Well done to all involved.

cumann na mbunscol – Football

Our own teams take to the field this week against St. Brigid’s BNS, Foxrock and St. Michael’s, Ballsbridge. There is great skill and teamwork on show this week in training and we have high hopes for a great season! It is wonderful to be back playing again. Thank you to our many teacher volunteers who have given up their free time to train, coach, manage and organise these matches.

After school chess club

Master Chess Club Dublin is organizing afterschool chess classes in your school starting from next week.  We will organize groups depending on the level of interest and age of students. Possible days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 2:30-3:30pm.  Please text your interest (SMS or WhatsApp message) to chess coach (Hector) at 083-4527900.  We need child’s name, class and preferred day(s).   Previous chess knowledge is not necessary.

Before lockdown there was a huge interest in afterschool chess classes in your school and to avoid waiting lists, we increased the size of the groups by adding a parent volunteer to attend to meet insurance requirement (student/adult ratio).  All parents who could help a few times between now and the summer (if needed), please let us know in the message.

Fee is €7 per class, and we will have short set between now and Easter break, 5 Tuesdays (€35.00), 4 Thursdays (€28.00) and 4 Fridays (€28.00), and a longer set after Easter break if your child wants to continue.

Depending on the interest shown, we will decide appropriate age groups according to the days and offer you a slot for your child.

Regards,
Hector,

Coping Strategies for Children with Anxiety

We will once again hold a Zoom Webinar with host Fiona Foreman, author of Weaving Wellbeing. The webinar will take place on May 10th at 7pm.

Please see the information attached as to what Fiona will discuss.

The number of children with anxiety has risen over the last number of years, for many complex reasons.  Anxiety can have different symptoms, and usually causes distress to children and limits their experiences.  It’s helpful to know that there are many things we can do to support an anxious child, including striking a balance between supporting them whilst also empowering them to deal with their anxious thoughts and feelings. This webinar will outline the protective factors in supporting children, as well as offering a number of evidence-based coping strategies that children can use to help them to feel safe, strong and confident.

congratulations

Huge congratulations to SNA, Catherine Walsh, who graduated from UCD last weekend. Catherine and her classmates were making history as the first cohort of SNAs to complete the new Inclusive School Support course designed by the National Council for Special Education and the DES. We will soon have 3 SNAs newly qualified in the course as Mary Mc Laughlin and Annette Doyle are on track to complete the course in 2022. Well done to all involved, your expertise will be utilized by all of us in Hollypark BNS.

CÓR NA NÓG children’s choir

Your Chance to Sing with Us in 2022!

Hurray! after almost two years of singing online only, our Choir is back to live rehearsals and performances. Now in our new home in the National Concert Hall, Cór na nÓg are running auditions on Sat 27 /Sun 27 March for a place on the Training Choir course. Places for September 2022 will be drawn from the TC group.

The choir offers great opportunities for performance and vocal development as well as being great fun and an enjoyable social outlet. We have got to know many families over 35 years, originally as part of RTÉ and from 2022 in our new home at the NCH. During the worst of covid our singers continued to meet and sing on Zoom twice a week, bringing a much-needed hour of joy and community activity.

ABOUT US

We are a mixed gender choir and rehearse during term time in the National Concert Hall - Wednesdays from 5.30pm -7pm and Saturdays from 9.30am-11.am, and members are expected to attend both regularly.

This year we are taking treble singers aged 9-13 (i.e voices should be unbroken).

We know it’s a big family commitment but year after year families return and many members go on to make music a vital and enjoyable part of their lives, taking their voices with them world-wide wherever they live or work!

AUDITIONS FOR 2022 Training Choir on Sat 26 / Sun 27 March in the NCH with the TC course starting on Sat 2 April, 2.30-4pm running for 5 Saturday sessions until 7 May.
